A poor set-up forces you to make compensations in your swing, so it is important to find the correct set-up for your swing, and learn to repeat it. Most high-handicappers—and even some low-handicappers and professionals—make common mistakes in their set-ups, which cause them to hit bad shots, develop bad habits and wreak havoc on their bodies. Let’s look at one of the most common mistakes in the set-up: too much weight in the heels at the address position.

Starting with too much weight on your heels not only causes you to be too upright at address position, but will make your swing flat, most likely making you pull the ball to the left. Or, you’ll end up making compensations by lifting your arms on the backswing, and cutting across the ball on the downswing, causing the ball to slice.
The golf swing requires a series of complex movements that are demanding on the body. If you start in an unbalanced or a faulty position, it is virtually impossible to build a repeating golf swing. Simply by improving your balance and correcting your weight distribution at address, you will have a better chance to make your most athletic and effective swing.
